Dettagli
Scientific name: Avena sativa
Family: Poaceae (Graminacee)
Brief history and botanical notes on the plant
Oats are a herbaceous plant belonging to the grass family.
It has a hollow and thin stem, the thin and elongated leaves are wrapped in a sheath. The grains are more elongated and narrow than those of wheat and the rind is much more robust.
In 4000 BC oats were already used as food, but they were wild oats.
Oats today are grown mainly in Asia and Europe. In Italy it is cultivated mainly in the southern regions.
The most cultivated species is avena sativa, while avena fatua is considered a weed.
Pedoclimatic needs
Oats, among all cereals, are the ones that require the most water consumption, therefore they are very susceptible to damage from the heat.
Oats, therefore, adapt to cool and humid climates.
Being very little resistant to the cold, oats are sown in spring, with the exception of regions with a hot-arid climate, where they are sown in autumn.
This cereal adapts very well to any type of soil.
Cultural care and processing
Autumn sowing should be done in October, while spring sowing should be done in March - April.
Compared to other cereals, whole oats produce a food rich in proteins, fats, fibre, carbohydrates and mineral salts.
Oat grains are intended for human or animal consumption, while the green plant is used as fodder.
Biodynamics
To stimulate the seeds, a bath in biodynamic preparations is recommended, such as valerian extract (507) and/or yarrow preparation (502).
