Description

Practical manual for designing and building with straw bales, an ecological material that guarantees excellent results thanks to the reduction of costs and energy consumption. The book is completed by a brief review of photos of straw houses built in various European countries.

Straw bale, as a construction material, guarantees excellent results thanks to the reduction of costs and energy consumption, thanks to the excellent thermal insulation characteristics.
This technique flourished until the 1940s, when the first buildings date back to the end of the 19th century and were built by the English settlers of the Nebraska plains, who, in the absence of stones and wood, successfully used straw bales to build the their homes. spread of cement caused its gradual decline. Currently, around 1000 new thatched buildings are being built worldwide per year. In Italy, one of the first straw bale buildings was built in the municipality of Pramaggiore (Ve), it is a house on two floors, each of which has an area of approximately 140 square metres. The building, equipped with a regular building permit, was built by Stefano Soldati, a student of Barbara Jones, as well as editor of the Italian edition of the book. He himself participated in the construction of around ten straw bale buildings in various European countries.

Barbara Jones , is the UK's leading expert on straw bale construction. She was responsible for adapting the technique, already widely used in North America, to European climatic conditions. Since 1994 he has led construction sites and courses throughout Europe and to date has participated in the construction of around eighty straw bale buildings, receiving numerous recognitions and prizes.
