The four Gospels are not a biography of Jesus Christ, but the narrative of that "archetypal life of the Son of God" always prefigured in mystery traditions. In numerous conferences, Rudolf Steiner developed this aspect, presenting the results of scientific-spiritual research on the historical life of Jesus of Nazareth up to his baptism in the Jordan. He called "Fifth Gospel" or "Gospel of Knowledge" those researches that completed the traditional Gospels, according to the concluding words of the Gospel of John: "There are many other things that Jesus did which, written down one by one, would fill so many books that the whole world might not be able to contain." (John 21, 25).
