Helena Norberg-Hodge

Helena Norberg-Hodge, trained as a linguist, was the first Westerner in modern times to speak fluent Ladaka. For the past 16 years, he has spent six months every year in Ladakh, working with the local people to protect their culture and natural environment from the rapid effects of modernization. For his work, he received the 1986 Right to Livelihood Award , also known as the alternative to the Nobel Prize. She is currently president of the International Society for Ecology and Culture and of the "Ladakh Project", its emanation, and is editor of the most important European ecological magazine The Ecologist .
