As everyone knows by now, in July 2012 the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva, the most powerful particle accelerator in the world, finally revealed the existence of the most elusive of subatomic particles, the Higgs boson. The truly titanic undertaking carried out by the entire European scientific community at CERN (in which Italy played an absolute leading role) achieved enormous resonance in the media, well beyond the scientific sphere of reference.

The reason for so much interest lies in the fact that the Higgs boson, the particle that had escaped our instruments for a long time, determines a field that permeates the entire Universe, creating with it the mass of elementary particles, which in turn create everything that exists in the world.

Without the Higgs boson nothing would exist. Its discovery therefore provided many answers at once, but as often happens in science it also brought an infinite number of new questions, to which laboratories all over the world are now trying to find new solutions.
