“hard seed” difficult to germinate – pre-germination at 28°C is recommended

Family: Solanaceae

Species: Solanum melongena

Origin: India

CLIMATE: optimal for growth 20-22°C - minimum 15°C - long photoperiod - sunny exposure - the greater day-night thermal difference, within the tolerance limits, increases floral induction. Fears strong winds.

SOWING: crescent moon - bushy varieties, 50x70 plant - 5 plants m2. In the vegetable garden, the double row is recommended. Pre-germination of the seed is recommended (keep the seed for 5-6 days in a warm cloth and then sow).

BIOINFORMA Very widespread species in vegetable gardens, it requires very little care but a lot of constant water, especially when it is loaded with fruit. The root is tap-rooted even if it has numerous superficial roots. For this reason we always recommend, WHEN POSSIBLE, direct sowing in order to allow the taproot to develop to the maximum. The increasingly widespread use of transplanting with pre-cultivated plants determines a limited taproot and very developed superficial roots, in this case irrigation must be more numerous and more abundant. More and more often the use of seedlings determines the fragility of the plant which manifests itself with collar rot. Being a rustic species it is difficult to get sick, in this case we recommend treatments based on elemental sulfur to create an acidic microenvironment as an obstacle to plant diseases (rot, aphids, red spider mite). Another piece of advice is to sow more varieties with different characteristics, early and late, round and long, with small and large fruits, that is, to diversify the plant. For the self-production of the seed it is necessary that the fruit is well ripe, almost rotten. For rotation it must not follow cucurbitaceae, chenopodiaceae and solanaceae, intercropping is possible with cabbage and lettuce
