Annual or biennial bushy herbaceous plant with smooth, erect, branched and bright green stems.

The leaves are oval trifoliate with finely toothed margins. The flowers, yellow in color and intensely scented (smell of coumarin from which the characteristic smell of fresh hay derives), are collected in long racemes. The fruit is a small globular legume, also yellowish in color.
