RUDOLF STEINER TRAVELER BETWEEN WORLDS

Dettagli

The Steiner that the reader will find in these pages is the son of a railway worker who was able to study only thanks to scholarships, who was not anchored to a recognized and profitable profession. Rich in interest in everything and everyone, he managed to have his say almost only in the last third of his existence.
Steiner was a scientist who fought all his life against the scientific reductionism dominant in his time, and advocated a research method for the so-called spiritual sciences no less rigorous than that of the physical and natural sciences. His "spiritual science" wanted to broaden, not deny, the results achieved by those sciences, for which he always had a competent and profound respect.
Appreciated as a very precocious Goetheanist, and read with some attention even as a young philosopher, he faced criticism, misunderstandings and slander when he began to speak about the spirit not in terms of faith or personal opinion, but with the rigor of a scientist. Soon confined among the spiritualists, who had raged in the second half of the nineteenth century, he lost overnight the cultural respectability that he had earned with twenty years of work. From that moment, that is, from when he began his mature spiritual teaching, his interlocutors were either enchanted and devoted listeners, or ruthless and prejudiced critics.
