STORY OF A FREE SCIENTIST - FIORENZA BELPOGGI

Dettagli

“It's time to understand more, so we can fear less.” Fiorella Belpoggi took Marie Curie's words and made them her own, becoming a world-famous scientist without losing measure or kindness. Telling its story means retracing the specificity of independent research, unique in Italy for the simple fact of being financed not by industry or some university, but by over 30,000 members, including ordinary citizens, associations and various bodies. These are, in fact, the financiers of the Ramazzini Institute of Bologna, of which Belpoggi is director. An autonomous research body, free from any pressure, created to highlight the close connections between environment and health and reveal the problems caused by an unhealthy idea of progress, with all its consequences. A path, that of Belpoggi, tiring, bumpy, in many ways complicated, but also full of exciting discoveries, astonishing encounters and international recognition. The book, co-written by Fiorella Belpoggi and the journalist Licia Granello, is the story of the utopia created by bottom-up scientific research, oriented towards the common good and not partisan interests, whose studies, conducted over the course of over 40 years on over 200 chemical agents have formed the scientific regulatory basis at national and international level. Part of the proceeds from this book will go to support the activities of the Ramazzini Institute.
